CryptMage is an easy to use file encryption tool, who was designed from the start to be user friendly, secure and reliable.

You can use it to encrypt files on your hard drive as well as your e-mail messages. CryptMage uses a proprietary algorithm that is highly resistant to attacks from all but determined professional cryptographers. This is not a shortcoming on the part of CryptMage because it is true of all encryption software of this type due to the power and speed of modern computers, which is increasing daily. Unless such an individual has physical access to your computer you don’t have anything to worry about with the encrypted files on your hard drive.
E-mail is a different problem altogether. When you send messages over the Internet just about anyone who wants to can see it. Think of it like sending a post card by snail-mail, everyone that comes in contact with it can read it. Using that analogy you can think of encryption as an envelope. Only someone who believes they have something to gain is going to go to the trouble of steaming it open. If you think there is someone out there with something to gain by reading your e-mail you can make their life a lot harder by encrypting all your e-mail, confidential or not. That increases the time and effort required because they will not know which ones may contain information they want and just give up after spending weeks cracking the grocery list you sent your spouse to pick up on the way home.
When you delete a file from your hard disk all that happens is the system reports the space the file took as available. The information from the file is still there until you save another file or data that overwrites it. This means that anyone with access to your hard drive can still read it with software that is readily available, such as the unerase utility that comes with Norton Utilities or by downloading such a utility from the Internet. Another of CryptMages security features is that it completely erases the original file from your hard disk by overwriting, then deleting it.
CryptMage is a stand-alone application, which means you only have to unzip and place it in any folder you wish. Then just click on Start\Run and double click on CryptMage and follow the instructions. You can also create a shortcut and place it on your desktop or start menu.

What's new:

· Not all changes to version 5 are cosmetic. Changes have also been made to the crypt engine itself. This means that v5 is incompatible with previous versions, i.e. v5 cannot decrypt files encrypted with previous versions nor can previous versions decrypt files encrypted with v5.
· That doesn’t mean users of previous versions need to immediately convert everything over to v5. You can keep both versions and just switch files over when convenient. I have no reason whatsoever to believe the crypt engine used in previous versions has been compromised.
